Puddleside used to be a crossroads hamlet before the Great Deluge. Once the water had settled, Puddleside was now on the coast and had inherited a medium-sized bay ideal for smaller ships and fishing boats. Prosperity came quick.
Aneiela’s father, Bartholomew Asa, had owned quite a bit of old Puddleside and he sharply converted his stake into a sizeable fortune. He became the ‘big man’ of Puddleside as Harbormaster, rival to Mayor Plinkett himself. Being that powerful meant he made plenty of enemies along the way.
His daughter, Aneiela, inherited the enmity of the other children just by who she was. Too often she was found in the schoolyard putting a beat down on someone else who’d teased her or sassed her for being rich. She became widely loathed.
Seeing his daughter’s struggle, Bartholomew apprenticed her for a year to the healing priests of Numagug, a few days sail away. Aneiela learned quickly, returning with good skill in her new craft. Sadly, the time away had softened neither her heart or those of the other young people who treated her cruelly.
When the daughter of Mayor Plinkett had a sore that would not heal, Aneiela was called upon. Her father gave her a strict lecture about upholding the oaths of her calling and putting aside her petty hurts to do the job. Even bolstered by him, Aneiela couldn’t keep herself from scarring the girl badly.
Fleeing from Puddleside leaving a blood feud with the Plinkett’s behind, Aneiela knew she was tough enough to handle any beast or bitch that got in her way.
